What is the ISEE and ISEE test prep? The ISEE is the Independent School Entrance Examination and is often an admissions requirement for private high schools and middle schools. The test is used as a benchmark to compare students’ academic abilities in key areas to help determine which students should be admitted among the elite and competitive applicant pool.

The Different Levels In ISEE

The different levels of the ISEE are based on the student’s current grade level. The Lower Level is for students in grades 5-6, the Middle Level is for grades 7-8, and the Upper Level is for grade 9 and higher. The test is broken down into four sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics Achievement, and Reading Comprehension. The same material is tested in all levels of ISEE, but at different degrees of difficulty.

When To Take The ISEE Prep Test

The exam is offered in three different seasons and the student is permitted to take the exam as many times as they would like, but are limited to one time per season. The seasons are Fall (Aug.-Nov.), Winter (Dec.-Mar.) and Spring/Summer (Apr.-Jul.).

Difference Between The ISEE And The SSAT Entrance Test

The SSAT and ISEE are the most recognized exams for admissions into private schools. While the tests both serve as comparative benchmarks and cover much of the same material, such as Vocabulary, Mathematics, and Reading Comprehension, there are key differences in the structure of each, including:

  • The use of synonyms and sentence completion in the ISEE prep test, while SSAT opts for analogies when testing for vocabulary.
  • ISEE makes use of long reading passages, but the SSAT is more diverse as they also extend to the poetry genre.
  • ISEE focuses more on mathematical reasoning compared to the SSAT in the Math category.

ISEE does not grade essays, but the schools typically get a copy of the student’s essay to serve as a point of reference.

Frequency— the specific times of the ISEE prep test depend on the location throughout the year, though most administer it during the fall and early winter.

Duration— The exam is administered in separate sections for a total duration 2 hours and 50 minutes for Upper and  2 hours and 30 minutes for Lower Level.

Sections— Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics Achievement, Reading Comprehension, and an optional, unscored Essay.
